By The Sea Soap Shoppe: Problematic Claims About Turmeric and Shea Butter

"Turmeric reduces inflammation, helps to clear up breakouts and reduce scars from acne. The Shea Butter reduces inflammation and helps to repair and heal damaged skin. It will not clog your pores, also helping to reduce breakouts."

"Avocado oil is moisturizing - and sorry, but I'm going to repeat myself - it also helps to reduce inflammation! The combination of the turmeric, shea butter and avocado oil makes this a very good choice for you if you have problem skin."

Turmeric contains curcumin, which has documented anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in scientific studies.

However:

  • Curcumin is not very stable in alkaline conditions.

  • Cold process soap has high pH (≈9–10 after curing).

  • Soap is on the skin briefly before rinsing.

Because of this, meaningful anti-inflammatory effects are unlikely from turmeric in soap.

"Helps clear up breakouts and reduce acne scars"

Not scientifically supported for soap

Acne improvement generally requires ingredients that remain on skin, such as:

  • salicylic acid

  • benzoyl peroxide

  • retinoids

  • leave-on niacinamide products

Soap contact time is too short to affect acne or scarring.

Also, acne scars involve dermal remodeling, which soap cannot influence.

"Shea butter reduces inflammation and helps repair and heal damaged skin"

Shea butter does contain:

  • fatty acids

  • small amounts of anti-inflammatory compounds

But in soap:

  • most oils are converted into soap molecules

  • only the superfat portion remains as oil

So the healing or anti-inflammatory effect is minimal.

"Good Choice for problem skin"

Problematic claim

“Problem skin” implies treatment of conditions such as:

  • acne

  • dermatitis

  • irritation

Cosmetic soap typically cannot treat skin conditions.

Bottom Line

Most artisan soap websites—including By the Sea Soap Shoppe—use ingredient storytelling rather than strict chemistry.

The ingredients are real, but the claimed biological skin benefits are often overstated because:

  1. saponification changes the ingredients

  2. many nutrients degrade

  3. soap is a rinse-off product
